Sarah Alexander, RN -
"Belly to Baby"
Registered nurse, childbirth educator, doula, breastfeeding counselor
Where: Coquitlam/Vancouver, BC
Description: Childbirth education classes / occasional doula work
Comments: My passion for the birthing process began in 1993 when I
volunteered at a midwifery clinic in The Philippines. Since than I have worked
to incorporate this passion into a meaningful career by training to become a
Registered Nurse specializing in Labour and Delivery, a Breastfeeding
Counselor, a Doula (providing women with emotional and physical support while in labour) and a Mother.
Heather Martin, British Columbia's leading prenatal educator and retired
midwife, has mentored me and encouraged the inception of Belly to Baby.
Prior to having my daughter Chloe, I felt prepared for labour but I didn't
realize how many questions I would face once she arrived. Belly to Baby not
only prepares you and your birth partner for labour and delivery, but also
guides you through the questions and answers that arise after your baby's
arrival.
My hope is that you will cherish your birth experience as a precious and
empowering time in your life. I want women to be satisfied with their birth
experience and be informed in their expectations. It is important that your
birth partners feel involved in the process and appreciate the value of their
role in this unique experience.
I am currently employed at BC Women's Hospital in Vancouver, BC as a
perinatal nurse. I reside with my husband, daughter Chloe, and Bernese Mountain
dog on Heritage Mountain in beautiful Port Moody, BC

Gloria Lemay, TBA (Traditional Birth Attendant, Midwife)
Vancouver, BC
Description: Childbirth Educator, Traditional Birth Attendant
Comments: Gloria Lemay has been attending births in BC for over 25 years
and has assisted with approximately 2000 births. She has faced relentless persecution by the BC College of
Midwives for not having joined their organization and becoming "regulated" in
1998, and yet, remains one of the most sought after birth educators and birth attendants in the province.
I love being a midwife. I want my gravestone to
read "Gloria Lemay MIDWIFE & MOTHER She spoke up for babies". Right across Canada, provincial governments are regulating and licensing
midwives in an effort to respond to consumer demand for gentler, kinder obstetric practices. Like many government programs, the midwifery
movement is losing its alternative nature and becoming more and more like the medical model it was supposed to replace.
Instead of truly opening up choice for women - grown women who chose to get pregnant, chose to stay pregnant and then choose to give birth
naturally without medications - the regulation of midwifery has created yet another controlled member of the medical monopoly on caring.
Women across the country are seeking yet another alternative.
Birth assistants, doulas, labour coaches, private birth attendants... there are many names for the women who are emerging to take up the
alternative role. Now, the same tactics that were used to keep the midwives down - legal action, ridicule, accusations of ignorance -
are being used to suppress the new alternative birth caregivers.

I believe that childbirth is a natural,
normal event in a woman's life, and will support women and babies as such. My

Comments: I am the mother to five beautiful children 5 to 13 years old. I have lived in a small rural community (Gold Bridge) for 17 years and
recently moved to Lillooet to pursue my doula work. As a mother who birthed
in a rural area experiencing a need for pre and post natal support services I am very passionate that women in rural communities have the opportunity to
receive doula care. I am willing to travel with women to Royal Inland
Hospital or accompany them closer to town to access midwifery care. I am in
the process of establishing a Pre/Post Natal Home Support Program in our
community which will hopefully extend to outlying communities feeding in to
Lillooet. I am very comfortable working with all cultures and respect your
birthing traditions. I feel very honoured to be able to work with and
support our aboriginal population. I have a special interest in supporting
single mothers, mums without birth partners and young mothers. I feel
honored to offer postpartum services to mums birthing their second or more
child that may need someone to stay in hospital or for a few days at home while they transition into mothering more than one!

Gurjeet S Minhas, RN (MSN, India and Australia) - "Joyous Birth Institute"
Where: Surrey, BC
Description: Teacher of the Joyous Birth Prenatal Preparation Playshops
Comments: My career as a nurse started in India where I completed my Masters
in Maternal health Nursing, I practiced my nursing skills for a number of
years. After completing my Masters in Nursing research degree in Australia
and a couple of years in New Zealand I arrived in Canada in 2001. As an RN working in the Birthing Unit, I observed women in pain with drugs
and epidurals as the common choice solution. This led me to question the
choices a woman had during her childbirth. I then studied many contemporary childbirth education solutions and designed
a unique program to prepare the pregnant woman physically, mentally,
emotionally while maintaining her connection with her baby and her spiritual
source. The Joyous Birth Playshops are a culmination of my life's education
and experience in 5 different countries, India, Australia, New Zealand,
Canada and the US. Joyous Birth Playshops are empowering, fun, interactive
and highly experiential and include you and your birth partner. It is also
a time to discuss any questions that arise during and after your baby's
arrival. I am currently employed at Surrey Memorial Hospital in Surrey, BC as a
perinatal nurse. I reside with my husband, and three children in Surrey, BC.

been the coordinator for Vancouver Childbirth, a founding developer of the
Douglas College Doula Course, the BC Doulas of North America representative, and
developed a holistic childbirth education series for The Midwifery Group. I have
been practicing as a doula and childbirth educator since 1987, supporting over

Description: Prenatal classes in a variety of formats, facilitated by an experienced instructor.
Comments: Class size: I limit class size so that I can give each class

teachers - I teach all of the classes, so couples can benefit from my 20+
years of teaching and labour support experience. Variety of formats: I know it can be difficult to fit prenatal classes into

Doula, member of DONA
Serving Downtown Vancouver and the lower mainland area
Birth Doula, Postnatal Doula, Breastfeeding support, Prenatal and Postnatal services and supplies.
As a Doula, I assist the mother and the partner to achieve the birth that they desire.
I believe that the partner is a very important member of the birth team.
I act as their advocate and voice. I believe that a Doula can help a labouring mother by giving her
the confidence to birth naturally. I provide support and information to ensure a safe and satisfying birth experience.
We meet 1-2 times prenatally where we develop a detailed birth plan (with alternatives).
I stay with the mother during childbirth and since I live downtown and close to major hospitals,
mothers very often labour at my home. I stay immediately post-partum where I assist with the first nursing.
After the birth I make 1-2 visits (more if needed) to assist with settling in.

"Doula Connections"
Serving the Edmonton area
I am a member of DONA and I am certified.
I will guide you through a journey of self discovery into the power you already
possess to create and control your personal birth experience.
When a friend of mine had a
doula for her birth in 2002, I thought, "I would love to be a doula." I took the
doula training in April of 2003, and the rest is history! I thoroughly enjoy
being a doula and feel very honoured and excited to be a part of a very special

During and after my pregnancy, I learned so much new and valuable information

Because of this passion to help other parents, I took a CAPPA doula course

like to meet with mom/family at least twice before birth. I will help you plan
for your birth by creating a birth plan. I can help you capture the miracle of
pregnancy in a belly casting. I will provide constant emotional and physical and

partum. I will assist you in breastfeeding, or with referrals to local agencies
if you desire. I have 4 breastfed children. 3 of them were delivered in the

- "Guiding Light Birth Services"
DONA trained, working through certification, member of Doula C.A.R.E
Serving Families in the GTA
Description: I am a DONA trained Birth Doula and I can provide Post Partum support as well.
Comments: I will work closely with you, your partner, family (which includes
siblings to the new baby), and care provider so that a birth plan is created
in your image and enforced in the way you need it to be. I have a strong
belief that all families deserve to have a safe, nurturing and most of all an
empowering birth experience. I also believe that families deserve a strong
support network during pregnancy, labour, birth and postpartum period. As a
Doula I can offer one branch of that network. As a Birth Doula I can help
empower families to achieve and receive the most positive birthing experience
they have mapped out for themselves. A woman and her family never forgets the
indelible mark that the birthing process leaves in their memory and hearts,
therefore it is vital that the memory of this time is filled with love,
support, peace and joy. I believe that the birth of a child is a gift, not a
moment of crisis. Women have the power within themselves, an inner light, to
give birth to their babies and can stay strong throughout the labour
period. As a Doula I am here to help that inner light burn strong with
emotional support, physical comfort and information so that the birthing
experience can be one of strength and confidence. I believe that a strong
team will provide the safe haven that women require in order to have a
positive birth experience. I believe that all women and their families deserve
to feel supported and nurtured during the birthing experience, so do not let
anything stand in your way of getting what you deserve.
I also provide a referral service in order to help you find childbirth
preparation classes, breastfeeding clinics and/or other Doulas.
I am also part of a Doula Team, therefore back-up is available. I am fluent in both English and French.
Thank you for considering what a Doula can provide for you, your partner and
family in the moment of life coming forth.

Comments: Ann has been teaching expectant moms and their birthing
companions this wonderfully peaceful way to birth in both comfort and joy since
January 2002. She is not only a Certified HypnoBirthing Practitioner, she's a
two-time HypnoBirthing mom herself. She is passionate about the Mongan Method
and eager to discuss it with you at any time. If you're an expectant mom who
desires to birth the way nature intended, HypnoBirthing is for you! Contact Ann
now for your FREE DVD introduction!
HypnoBirthing® - The Mongan Method is as much a philosophy as it is a
technique. The concept of HypnoBirthing® is not new, but rather a "rebirth" of
the philosophy of birthing as it existed thousands of years ago and as it was
recaptured in the work of Dr. Grantly Dick-Read, an English obstetrician, who
first forwarded the concept of natural birthing in the 1920s. The method teaches
you that in the absence of fear and tension, severe pain does not have to be an accompaniment of labour.

- "Living Birth Doula Services"
Montreal, Quebec
I provide prenatal courses, 24 hour
on-call labour support, and postnatal care to women in the Montreal area.
Whether my clients are choosing to give birth in hospital or at the birthing
centre, I will provide continuous companionship and support throughout pregnancy
and childbirth.
I am a holistic practitioner in the fullest sense of the
word. I have a twenty-year background in women's health and herbalism, but my
approach to birthing has evolved over the years. I believe that all aspects of a
woman's life and experience can influence the way she will give birth. During
our prenatal sessions, we will cover the physical preparations for birthing,
such as nutrition, exercises, and preparing the perineum, and we will also try
to do whatever emotional work necessary to open up the birthing channel. This
work may include visualization, processing previous birthing or pregnancy
experiences, and often just means listening. My goal is an active, aware, and
accepting mother and a welcomed child.

Description: Birth Doula Services, DONA Trained Postpartum Doula
Comments: I believe birth is about more than delivering a child...it is the
transition to a new or expanded family and an experience that can be very
empowering. Women are realizing that there are many options available to them
and I enjoy helping families establish and realize their wishes.
Parents deserve to feel that they know what is best for their baby and their
bodies and need to be involved and truly informed in the decision making
process. I believe that when parents feel that they truly have a say in the
course of their labor that it will be a positive experience regardless of
whether it is an un-medicated and non-interventive birth or a caesarean birth.
If you want to know more about myself and my services, please contact me to
set up a free, no obligation interview. Enjoy your amazing journey!!!
During prenatal visits I will help you establish what your wishes and
desires are regarding this birth. I can help you find evidence based research
and information on the true benefits and risks of common procedures as well as
support your choices. Each of my clients are individuals and we will work
together to find out how I can help you have a satisfying birth experience.
